Zainab Ansell and the 40 Years of Zara Adventures
Zainab Ansell and the 40 Years of Zara Adventures
For four decades, one name has remained
synonymous with Tanzania’s tourism success story: Zainab Ansell. Affectionately known as
“Mama Zara,” she has transformed a modest travel business into one of East
Africa’s most respected tourism brands while helping position Tanzania as a
premier global destination for adventure travel. As Zara Tanzania Adventures
celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026, the milestone offers an opportunity to
reflect on a remarkable journey of entrepreneurship, resilience, and impact.
Humble
Beginnings in a Challenging Era
The story of Zara Tanzania Adventures began
in 1986, a period when Tanzania’s tourism industry was still in its infancy.
International visitor numbers were relatively low, communication technology was
limited, and establishing a tourism company required extraordinary
determination. Before launching her business, Zainab Ansell worked as a reservation and
ticketing agent at the then Air Tanzania Corporation, where she gained valuable
experience in travel and aviation. Inspired by the potential of Tanzania’s
tourism sector, she left the security of her job and founded Zara International
Travel Agency, which later evolved into Zara Tanzania Adventures.
At the time, few could have predicted that
the small company would become one of the most influential tourism enterprises
in the region. There was no internet, no online booking platforms, and limited
international connectivity. Yet Ansell recognized the growing global demand for
authentic travel experiences and positioned her company to serve adventurous
travelers seeking more than traditional holidays.
Building a
Tourism Powerhouse
Over the years, Zara Tanzania Adventures
expanded from a travel agency into a comprehensive tourism and hospitality
group. The company became particularly renowned for organizing Mount
Kilimanjaro expeditions, wildlife safaris, cultural tours, and beach holidays
across Tanzania. Today, it is recognized as one of the country’s leading tour
operators and among the largest Kilimanjaro outfitters.
Operating from Moshi, at the foothills of
Mount Kilimanjaro, Zara Tanzania
Adventures has guided thousands of travelers to some of Africa’s most
iconic destinations, including the Mount Kilimanjaro, Serengeti National Park,
Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Zanzibar. The company's growth
has mirrored the rise of Tanzania’s tourism sector, which has become one of the
nation’s most important sources of foreign exchange and employment.
A Pioneer of
Sustainable Tourism
Long before sustainable tourism became a
global trend, Zainab Ansell was
championing responsible travel practices. Her vision extended beyond profit to
include environmental conservation, community development, and local
empowerment. Through Zara
Tanzania Adventures and related ventures, she has promoted tourism models
that benefit local communities while protecting Tanzania’s natural heritage.
In 1995, she established Tanzania Wild Camps (ZITA), a hospitality
venture focused on eco-conscious accommodations located near major wildlife
attractions. The properties were designed not only to serve travelers but also
to create jobs and economic opportunities for surrounding communities.
Her commitment to social responsibility
also led to the creation of Zara
Tanzania Charity, an organization supporting education, healthcare,
environmental conservation, and community empowerment projects across Tanzania.
Through these initiatives, tourism became a vehicle for broader social impact.
Recognition
and Global Influence
The success of Zara Tanzania Adventures has
earned widespread recognition. The company has received numerous awards,
including being named Africa’s Leading Tour Operator at the World Travel Awards
and winning top honors from Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA). Under Ansell’s
leadership, Zara Tanzania
Adventures has become a respected international brand known for quality
service, innovation, and sustainability.
Zainab
Ansell herself has received several accolades for her contributions to
business, tourism, and community development. In 2025, she was honored with the
Top Women Excellence Award for her role in transforming Tanzania’s tourism
industry and inspiring women entrepreneurs across the region.
Forty Years of
Impact
The celebration of Zara Tanzania Adventures’ 40th
anniversary is more than a corporate milestone; it is a testament to visionary
leadership and perseverance. What started as a small travel agency in 1986 has
grown into a multifaceted tourism enterprise that welcomes visitors from around
the world, employs hundreds of people, supports local communities, and
showcases Tanzania’s extraordinary attractions on the global stage.
As the company enters its fifth decade, its
legacy continues to inspire the next generation of tourism entrepreneurs.
Through innovation, sustainability, and an unwavering belief in Tanzania’s
potential, Zainab Ansell has
demonstrated how one entrepreneur can help shape an industry and leave a
lasting impact on a nation.
Forty years later, Zara Tanzania Adventures stands
not only as a successful business but also as a symbol of Tanzania’s rise as
one of Africa’s premier tourism destinations—a legacy built by the vision and
determination of Mama Zara herself.
