ZARA TOURS HAND IN HAND WITH THE WORLD'S MILLENIUM GOALS TOWARDS ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

At the Millennium Summit in September 2000 the largest gathering of world leaders in history adopted the UN Millennium Declaration, committing their nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets, with a deadline of 2015, that have become known as the Millennium Development Goals

THE 8 WORLD MILLENNIUM GOALS

HOW  ARE WE (ZARA TOURS) ACHIEVING THESE MILLENNIUM GOALS

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger - Zara Tours provided employment to 1080 employees around Moshi, Arusha and Karatu regions in Tanzania. They work in different department in all Zara Tours offices and properties and they have different educational and life backgrounds. They vary from office workers, mountain guides, safari guides, cooks, waiters and waitresses, housekeepers, watchmen, car mechanics, mountain porters and etc. The income that all these employees get from working with Zara Tours has enabled them to take care of their families and sustain their lives. For this reason unemployment rate is reduced which eradicates poverty and hunger to an extent.

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education - every child in Africa and the rest of the world deserves a good start. Roger & Zainab Ansell the sol founders of Zara Tours initiate a charity foundation Zara Charity. This charity has provided pre school educational opportunity to children at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which contributes to their educational development and enhance school achievement later. Currently the maasai children get pre-school education where they learn Swahili, English, basic skills and gaining exposure to classroom environment this motivates their families to be more supportive of the formal education and the children stay in school longer and do better. Zara Charity aims at finishing the classrooms and dormitories used by the maasai children by furnishing them with all necessary equipment to sustain the children comfortably. Also Zara Charity aims at building more premises to enroll more children and offer them with additional skills and training.

Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women - Maasai women make a change project, this movement was initiated with the aim of supporting women and liberate them from their traditional beliefs which is based on oppression, exploitation and subjugation of women within their society. Zara Charity employed them, educated them about their roles, rights and responsibilities from family level, community level as well as national level and now they know that women play a vital role to enhance community economic development. More than 36 Maasai women have been empowered by being taught skills, provided with capital and offered a favorable environment for their works. Every year a group of 12 women is sponsored.

Goal 3 & 4 : Reduce child mortality and improve maternal health- Malaria threatens at least 24 million pregnancies each year in Africa, it causes anemia and can result in miscarriage and the delivery of premature and low birth weight babies. Seeing this Zara Charity  initiated  a healthy marathon and festival event which is conducted in Karatu every year and goes by the name "The Ngorongoro Marathon". It was launched in year 2008 with the aim of contributing to the ongoing global and national effort towards the fight against malaria. Community involvement and mobilization against malaria needed bold and innovative ideas, the marathon being one of them. In the following years more themes for the marathon were adopted such as “brick for life” with the aim of creating awareness and fundraising for the maasai pre school.

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability - 21st to 30th April 2016 Zara Tours participated in the campaign of cleaning Mount Kilimanjaro, where by Zara staff and clients climbed kilimanjaro and cleaned the mountain for sustainable use. Apart from that Zara Tours supports TESO (Tourism and Environmental Social Organization), it is a non governmental organization which aims in keeping the environment friendly for sustainable tourism. TESO has successfully distributed 700 trees in local governments offices and schools in Moshi Kilimanjaro.

NGORONGORO MAASAI PRE SCHOOLS

Maasai community has one of the highest illiteracy and lowest school enrollment rates in East Africa, primarily due to lack of enough schools and pastoral life adaptations which prevents many children from receiving an education. We strongly believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty that plagues their communities and can create a better future for children and their families. That is why we started to promote education in Ngorongoro Conservation Area among Maasai adaptations by building a Pre-school where by 96 children are currently registered on our two maasai pre-schools thats (enduleni and Isirwa pre schools) and with it an opportunity to sponsor a child as he or she begins an education journey that will prepare him or her for future success.

Zara Charity is proud to have played a vital role in bringing education to pre-school aged children of Ngorongoro.

Here, children are given meals, learn basic skills and Swahili, and be exposed to a classroom environment. With this foundation, they will be better prepared for Primary School and will stay in school longer and do better. Pre-primary school opportunities also help to encourage families to be more supportive of formal education. Ngorongoro pre-school offers the hope of education to Maasai children, who face many challenges to education. Some do not live close enough to school to attend, while others are too poor to afford it. The opening of Ngorongoro pre-school offers quality education to a new generation of Maasai children.

To sponsor a student in Pre-school (elementary education) through High School, the cost of one full year is $850 (that is just $2.3/day!) and you may choose to pay this on a monthly basis at $70/month. You also have the option to co-sponsor a student for $425/year or $35/month. Through the profound investment of an education, you can transform a child’s life and enable them to have a brighter future. We hope that you consider supporting Maasai children through ZARA Charity.

Only 1% of funds is expected from the parents, while the remainder needed for the students is raised with the help of sponsors. You can also help fund this program by assisting with operational costs such as school supplies. Learn more about the children you will be helping and don’t hesitate to contact Zara Charity for further details (www.zaracharitytanzania.org)

ZARA Charity being part of ZARA tours sustainable tourism plan believes education can be the best approach in transforming Maasai communities of which part of the company business is to interact with their culture. We focus on building a support system for children by constructing better facility for them to stay and learn, ensuring access to safe and healthy learning environments, strengthening teaching quality, and providing scholarships.

This April the Regional Commissioner of Kilimanjaro Said Meck Sadick launched the clean up campaign for Mount Kilimanjaro. The campaign was entitled "leave the mountain clean, conserve the environment so that it can protect you".

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa.
He emphasized that all tour companies in Tanzania should focus on providing quality services and practice sustainable tourism. In doing so the mountain will be protected from land degradation, loss of biodiversity and litters which pollutes the mountain.

ZARA TOURS USES TOURISM TO FIGHT POACHING.

Zara Tours invites concerned travelers to come to Tanzania and support the fight against poaching.
Tour for seven days with experienced guides, visiting the national parks and protected wild lands that many animals of Africa call home, and 15 percent of every booking will be donated to anti-poaching initiatives by the Ministry of Natural Resource and Tourism, Tanzania National Parks Department.

This specially designed safari takes visitors through Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Serengeti National Park, Arusha National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater, and even includes a balloon safari over the Serengeti. See with your own eyes elephants, monkeys, zebras, impalas, giraffes, buffalos, rhinos, hippos, flamingos, cheetahs, hyenas, and more, all of whom are at risk under the current threat from poachers.

Zara Tours is a team of people who strongly agree that well-planned tourism can be a highly effective way to fight poaching. As most wildlife tourist destinations are impacted by illegal killings of animals, joint approaches to sustainable tourism have begun to arise, together with effective governmental measures to further the protections.
In a country where almost a third of the land is protected and preserved, for the people as well as for the wildlife, there is still an ever present danger of poaching, especially for elephants and rhinos. Now people from around the world can experience the heritage of the country while also participating in the anti-poaching wars.
