ZARA TOURS HAND IN HAND WITH THE WORLD'S MILLENIUM GOALS TOWARDS ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

At the Millennium Summit in September 2000 the largest gathering of world leaders in history adopted the UN Millennium Declaration, committing their nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets, with a deadline of 2015, that have become known as the Millennium Development Goals

THE 8 WORLD MILLENNIUM GOALS

HOW  ARE WE (ZARA TOURS) ACHIEVING THESE MILLENNIUM GOALS

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger - Zara Tours provided employment to 1080 employees around Moshi, Arusha and Karatu regions in Tanzania. They work in different department in all Zara Tours offices and properties and they have different educational and life backgrounds. They vary from office workers, mountain guides, safari guides, cooks, waiters and waitresses, housekeepers, watchmen, car mechanics, mountain porters and etc. The income that all these employees get from working with Zara Tours has enabled them to take care of their families and sustain their lives. For this reason unemployment rate is reduced which eradicates poverty and hunger to an extent.

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education - every child in Africa and the rest of the world deserves a good start. Roger & Zainab Ansell the sol founders of Zara Tours initiate a charity foundation Zara Charity. This charity has provided pre school educational opportunity to children at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which contributes to their educational development and enhance school achievement later. Currently the maasai children get pre-school education where they learn Swahili, English, basic skills and gaining exposure to classroom environment this motivates their families to be more supportive of the formal education and the children stay in school longer and do better. Zara Charity aims at finishing the classrooms and dormitories used by the maasai children by furnishing them with all necessary equipment to sustain the children comfortably. Also Zara Charity aims at building more premises to enroll more children and offer them with additional skills and training.

Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women - Maasai women make a change project, this movement was initiated with the aim of supporting women and liberate them from their traditional beliefs which is based on oppression, exploitation and subjugation of women within their society. Zara Charity employed them, educated them about their roles, rights and responsibilities from family level, community level as well as national level and now they know that women play a vital role to enhance community economic development. More than 36 Maasai women have been empowered by being taught skills, provided with capital and offered a favorable environment for their works. Every year a group of 12 women is sponsored.

Goal 3 & 4 : Reduce child mortality and improve maternal health- Malaria threatens at least 24 million pregnancies each year in Africa, it causes anemia and can result in miscarriage and the delivery of premature and low birth weight babies. Seeing this Zara Charity  initiated  a healthy marathon and festival event which is conducted in Karatu every year and goes by the name "The Ngorongoro Marathon". It was launched in year 2008 with the aim of contributing to the ongoing global and national effort towards the fight against malaria. Community involvement and mobilization against malaria needed bold and innovative ideas, the marathon being one of them. In the following years more themes for the marathon were adopted such as “brick for life” with the aim of creating awareness and fundraising for the maasai pre school.

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability - 21st to 30th April 2016 Zara Tours participated in the campaign of cleaning Mount Kilimanjaro, where by Zara staff and clients climbed kilimanjaro and cleaned the mountain for sustainable use. Apart from that Zara Tours supports TESO (Tourism and Environmental Social Organization), it is a non governmental organization which aims in keeping the environment friendly for sustainable tourism. TESO has successfully distributed 700 trees in local governments offices and schools in Moshi Kilimanjaro.
